To save the Winter Kingdom from the Pale Queen’s dark designs, Claire must attempt to awaken her mother’s hidden magic. Cold Dream Dawning Pale Queen Book 2 eBook A R Kahler
This book was pretty disappointing. At the start, the heroine is faced with a choice that isn't really a choice at all -- after being placed under a magical contract that robs her of her free will, she has to decide whether to kill her mother, who is... inevitably dying anyway, thanks to some events set in motion by accident. And despite there being no choice to make, she spends the entire book making it. If you want to find out what happens after she makes the choice... well, that's apparently what the next book is for.Add in the fact that the heroine's emotional life is a grating broken record of shallow, uninterestingly written self pity (killing people over minor crimes for stress relief, looking down her nose at dreary suburban humans and their meaningless lives, then moping about how no one loves her because she's an assassin) and you get a pretty tedious read. I did enjoy the first book, so I'll probably press on with the series to see how it wraps up, but this was definitely a painfully long and drawn out "will the heroine do the thing" sort of book without much to offer except empty suspense.

Cold Dream Dawning Pale Queen Book 2 eBook A R Kahler Reviews
This was a great entry in the series. It showed vulnerability lots of emotion, and heart. I thought the storyline was great. It felt fresh, even though we are familiar with the kingdoms realms and characters. We saw a more emotional Claire. Also loved having the characters from the immortal circus. Kingston is such a great character. We also saw him more emotional than we had. He really does love Vivian.
Overall a decent book and a good follow-up to the previous one. It explores the relationship between Claire and her mother, as well as an introspective journey into the assassin's own mind. Even though it provides some insight into the character's development and internal turmoil, it didn't really advance the main plot much. You are still left wondering the same things you were at the end of book one, except you've got a little more reason to want to know what's going on now. There are a few twists along the way that provide some curious new questions for the resolution, but they are not interesting enough to make it worth the whole book. I think Claire would have moved this along quite a bit further if she would just stay strong. I appreciate a character with weaknesses, but for someone who's so hardcore, this book found more than enough faults to make you feel like she's definitely in the wrong profession. So, overall, I enjoyed the read and appreciated the detail, but really wish more actually happened. Still looking forward to the next one in the series.
An excellent follow up on Pale Queen Rising. The story line developed slowly at first and then picked up momentum and ended with a bang. Cannot wait for the next installment. I totally lived Claire's frustration and anger and at the same time I felt Kingston's hurt and Mab's fear. Another wonderful series by AR Kahler set in the world on faery.
Seriously, sh*t hits the fan and it's not something Claire is used to having to clean up, blood on the other hand...
Book two has Claire reeling after the rise of the Pale Queen and the betrayal of Roxie, someone she unexpectedly let get too close. Now she must find her true mother and chart a course to save the kingdom of Winter and its Queen, or die... possibly both if she isn't careful!
With no desire to fight, but every desire to live she will have to make a choice, and quickly.
WHAT THE BLEEP HAPPENED TO ELI, LOVE HIM...... I love these stories, I love how they all end up back at the circus..... Love each story line, Love each character, even the naughty ones. I love how strong Claire is, no matter what, she remains tuff, even if she does get a lil mushy inside now n then. Can't wait to read the third book, wish the third book wasn't the last of this story line, so much to explore, Where Kingston originated, How Mab came to power, Who is now going to take control of Summer, SO MUCH more, YOU HAVE SO MUCH MORE TO TELL US, KAHLER......Don't stop with book three, just dont...... I have some chalk in my pocket, I might just have to pay you a visit to convince you...... might bring Lilith.....
I dislike the main character in this series so I suppose thats a major contributor of why I've rated it poorly. I read the Immortal Circus series first and thought it was brilliant. I had high hopes of this series as it was a continuation of sorts but the writing doesn't seem to have the same magical quality that the first series had. The main character is really whiny and goes around claiming to be a bad ass but that's not shown in the action. feels more like I'm being told rather than shown her character.
Sigh, I'm still ploughing through the second book because I have a tiny spark of hope that the plot will be worth it. But I am skipping through paragraphs of the annoying narrative (
I loved the book as a whole but dang it Claire pissed me off. I realize that she had some growing up to do but she wasn't as strong as she was in the first book. She was too much of a cry baby but then again if I had just had to kill my girlfriend and had really no choice in a terrible decision ahead, I might be a little upset too. I loved all the different settings in this book. We got to see new parts of the castle, modern surburbia, the circus, and the forest. I was SO HAPPY we got to back to the circus and see some of the old characters. And Kingston! Ugh I just love him so much. I loved seeing more of his background. The book overall was a good follow up to the first book and set up what could be a fantastic ending in the last one. I can't wait to read it!
